Study Abroad Program Snapshot

Uganda2Students will spend ten days in Uganda on a summer program providing healthcare to an under-served population.
This trip allows students to experience the culture of a country, learn the components of a cultural assessment, and have an increased understanding of international health issues/challenges of the identified population. Students will have the opportunity to work with faculty and licensed healthcare professionals to provide care to a diverse cultural/ethnic group.

Uganda is a beautiful country in Sub-Saharan Africa. The magnificent Nile River flows from Uganda northward through Sudan and Egypt. Lake Victoria, the world’s largest natural lake, makes up much of the southeastern border of this country. Uganda borders Kenya to the east, Rwanda and Tanzania to the south, Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, and Sudan to the North. Helping Hands Uganda is based in the eastern part of Uganda, near the Kenya border, in the districts of Busia and Bugiri. The Village of Eden is west of Busia in the little bush village of Namuwombi.

NURS 3250 – Cultural Immersion - A Healthcare Experience (3hrs)
 

Students will spend a week in an identified country providing healthcare to an under-served population. Students will have the privilege of working with local health care providers and will also work with clinic staff to visit nearby villages to provide medical and nursing care. Common diagnoses could include but are not limited to: backaches, gastritis, arthritis, coughs/sinus problems, skin infestations and infections, parasites. Opportunities for education focused on prevention and wellness are abundant.
 
BIOL 4900 – Internship in Biology (3hrs)
